Alicia Keys

Alicia Augello Cook (born January 25, 1981) is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist who emerged as one of the defining voices of contemporary R&B and pop music. Raised in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen by her mother, Keys showed musical talent from early childhood, beginning classical piano lessons at age seven and composing her first song by twelve. Her classical training—studying composers like Chopin and Beethoven—became foundational to her artistic identity, providing both technical mastery and emotional depth.

After signing with Columbia Records at fifteen, Keys faced significant creative conflicts with the label over artistic control. Determined to maintain her vision, she left the label and independently developed her debut album with producer Kerry "Krucial" Brothers. Released in 2001, Songs in A Minor became a massive commercial and critical success, selling over 12 million copies worldwide and winning five Grammy Awards. The album's lead single, "Fallin'," reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, introducing Keys's distinctive blend of classical piano, soul, and contemporary R&B to global audiences.

Keys sustained her momentum through the 2000s with platinum-selling albums including The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003), As I Am (2007), and The Element of Freedom (2009). She earned her fourth number-one hit with Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" (2009) and continued releasing successful albums including Girl on Fire (2012). Her artistry—characterized by introspective lyrics, sophisticated production, and virtuosic piano playing—established her as both a pop innovator and R&B traditionalist.

Beyond music, Keys has become recognized for humanitarian work and activism. She co-founded Keep a Child Alive, an HIV/AIDS organization, serving as its Global Ambassador. In 2023, she wrote and produced Hell's Kitchen, a Broadway musical that won two Tony Awards. With over 90 million records sold worldwide, 17 Grammy Awards, and recognition as Billboard's top R&B/Hip-Hop artist of the 2000s, Keys ranks among music's most influential contemporary artists. Her legacy reflects her commitment to artistic authenticity, technical excellence, and using her platform for social impact.
